Halie Loren’s new album, A Kind of Wilderness, was released worldwide on September 4th by Nettwerk Music and Victor Entertainment/JVCKenwood! Through eleven expansive songs, Loren spreads her wings and draws from her musically diverse background. From the roots of jazz, she seamlessly incorporates shades of soul, funk, and pop, all held together by her phenomenal vocal delivery. As the title implies, Loren used songwriting as her own wilderness of sorts – finding a reprieve from the upheavals of the world. The result is some of the most compelling compositions of her career.
Songs like “Bitter Fruit” and “From the Bottom of the Ocean” feature delicate, nostalgic arrangements that underscore sweeping melodies. Lyrically, she intimately toes the line between hope and melancholy. Elsewhere, Loren shows off fresh takes on classic songs like Don McLean’s “Vincent” and Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.” A Kind of Wilderness takes listeners on a timeless musical journey.
Halie reflects: “Bringing these particular songs, as a songwriter, felt riskier than ever before. The topics they explore are mostly bathed in a lot of shadow and mortality. They feel like they really reflect where my mind goes and where my spirit lives in this era of my life.”
A Kind of Wilderness was recorded primarily with engineer Nicolas Petrowski at Studio MixArt in Montreal, Quebec, over a “lightning speed three-day session,” including an extra unplanned night in the studio after her flight out was delayed, and she took advantage of the extra time for further recording. Such immediacy also translated to the music itself, which finds an easy and adventurous groove. The musicians gathered for this album are a who’s who of the Montreal and broader Canadian music scene: Morgan Moore on bass, Taurey Butler on piano, drummers Robbie Kuster and Jim Doxas, and Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar.
